Publication Formats

Understand the editorial form, evidentiary expectation and institutional meaning of each publication label.

A visible format label tells the reader what kind of claim is being made. Analysis, commentary, opinion, case notes and editorials do not carry the same editorial meaning.

Why format labels matter

A format label communicates the kind of editorial claim, expected depth, relationship to current events and ownership of the conclusion. It is not a ranking of quality. A short Dispatch may be the most responsible form where facts are developing; a long Analysis is appropriate where doctrine and counterargument require sustained treatment.

Format questions

Can a publication’s label change?

Yes before publication if the manuscript develops differently from the pitch. A post-publication relabelling should occur only to correct a material misclassification and should be recorded where it affects reader understanding.

Is Commentary less rigorous than Analysis?

No. It is usually shorter and more timely, but its factual and legal propositions remain subject to verification.
